What is packet loss?

Packet loss is the failure of one or more network packets to successfully reach their destination.

Packet loss is commonly associated with congestion, queue overflow, interface errors, unstable routing paths, hardware failures, wireless interference, overloaded devices, or other network conditions that interrupt reliable packet delivery.

Although packet loss is often discussed as a network impairment, it is usually a symptom of underlying operational conditions rather than the root cause itself.

How packet loss happens
