What is outbound traffic?

Outbound traffic is network traffic that leaves a device, host, interface, application, or network boundary toward another system or external destination.

It is commonly used to describe traffic flowing outward from internal systems, enterprise networks, cloud environments, datacenters, branch locations, or security zones toward external networks, services, or communication endpoints.

Outbound traffic is also commonly referred to as egress traffic, outgoing traffic, or sent traffic.

The meaning of outbound traffic always depends on the observation point and traffic direction being analyzed.


How outbound traffic works

Traffic direction is always relative to a specific observation point or network boundary.

A packet leaving a server interface is outbound relative to that server, while the same traffic may appear as inbound traffic from the perspective of the receiving host or external service.

Similarly, traffic leaving an enterprise network toward the internet is typically considered outbound at the network perimeter, even though that same communication may later appear as inbound traffic elsewhere in the communication path.
